In the pharmaceutical industry, corn starch is an important raw material in the antibiotic industry, as almost all antibiotics are produced using the corn starch fermentation method, such as penicillin, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, streptomycin, and various aminoglycoside antibiotics, all of which are produced by fermentation and extraction of industrial microorganisms using starch as a substrate. Another important use of corn starch is as a pharmaceutical excipient; in the early days, the vast majority of tablets produced by pharmaceutical factories worldwide used corn starch as a filler and binder.
