Application examples of pregelatinized starch
Pregelatinized starch is a modified starch produced by chemically or mechanically treating starch granules to partially or completely rupture them, resulting in a free-flowing powder directly compressible. It's a white or off-white powder, ranging from coarse to fine, odorless with a slightly unique taste. In pharmaceuticals, it's commonly used as a binder, diluent, and disintegrant in oral tablets and capsules. While stable, pregelatinized starch is hygroscopic and should be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
Pre-gelatinized starchApplication Examples:
1. Aspirin (Direct Compression)
Take 360.0 parts of aspirin (20-mesh crystals) and 90.0 parts of α-starch. Direct compression using conventional methods yields the product.
2. Furosemide (Granulation and Compression)
Furosemide 40.00 parts, Lactose 10.37 parts, α-starch 3.50 parts, constitute component A; Stearic acid 0.75 parts, Magnesium stearate 0.38 parts, α-starch 15.00 parts, constitute component B. The method involves first drying and mixing component B, then adding water with a mass fraction of 11.58% for granulation, drying, passing through a 20-mesh sieve, mixing component A with the granules, and compressing to obtain the product.
Pre-gelatinized starchPre-gelatinized starch is a modified starch. It uses chemical or mechanical methods to partially or completely rupture starch granules, giving the starch flowability and direct compressibility. It is a white or off-white powder of appropriate coarse to fine texture, odorless, with a slightly special taste. In the pharmaceutical field, it is commonly used as a binder, diluent, and disintegrant in oral tablets and capsules. Pre-gelatinized starch is stable but easily absorbs moisture and should be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.

Uses: Pre-gelatinized starch is a modified starch used in oral capsule and tablet formulations as a binder, diluent, and disintegrant. Compared to starch,Pre-gelatinized starchit increases flowability and compressibility. Used as a binder in dry granulation processes, pre-gelatinized starch acts as a self-lubricant. When used with other excipients, a lubricant must also be added, generally 0.25% (W/W) magnesium stearate. Too much adversely affects tablet strength and dissolution. Therefore, stearic acid is generally preferred to lubricate pre-gelatinized starch.Pre-gelatinized starchIt can also be used in wet granulation.
